‘SPLASH’, Your Belief, Our Canvas! was the first event of the year organized by SRF to extend a warm welcome to new students and a welcome back for the seniors. It was held on 30th July perfectly placed for students to get a much-needed respite in the midst of a frantic first trimester. A cloth bag painting competition, SPLASH saw a large turnout as 67 teams of students, participating both individually and in teams of two, gathered on the 5th-floor lounge from 5:30 to 8:30 PM. The response was an overwhelming one and prompted the setting up of on-the-spot registrations so that everyone could get a chance to flourish those paintbrushes.
SRF activities are deeply embedded in the cultural context of Mumbai and Maharashtra, with the underlying essence being that of social responsibility. In light of the recent plastic ban by the government, this event was particularly apt as it promoted the use of cloth bags as a viable and sustainable alternative. Students could just walk in after a long, tiring day of classes, utilize the bags and paints provided by SRF and try their hand at something creative and meaningful.
The theme of the event was also befitting the occasion, with participants required to choose any one of the17 Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs) of the UN and represent it in their own way. With fun and frolic prevalent, some participants took it up a notch, getting their faces painted as well. And of course, what’s a college event without some element of competition? Prizes of INR 10000 were up for grabs. Post the event, SRF uploaded pictures of all the entries on its Facebook Page. Teams had to garner as many likes as possible by using the hashtag #BeatThePlastic within a 24-hour window. The count of total likes in the post was a small evaluating factor. The other parameters used to evaluate the bags used by the judge Professor Santana Pathak of NMIMS were creativity, painting skills, social media reach and Relevance of SDG goal in the creative. Given the number of teams and the overflowing creativity that the event witnessed, the decision couldn’t have been an easy one. Nevertheless, four winning teams were identified. Everyone enjoyed participating in the competition and appreciated SRF for coming up with such an event.
